For the second time this summer a baby has died after being left in a hot car by the mother in Indian River County.
Stephanie Ann Salvilla Werking, of the 100 block of Drake Way, was booked into the Indian River County Jail on Thursday afternoon, according to jail records. She was charged with manslaughter.
Werking told police she had driven to work in Vero Beach on July 24 and forgot to stop at a day care center to drop off her 6-month-old son, Gannon Werking, who was in the back seat. She discovered the boy's dead body in the car at the end of her work day, police said.
Fellsmere resident Alejandra Alvarado, 21, was charged on July 6 in the death of her 1-year old son, Aiden. Alvarado told the Indian River County Sheriff's Office she parked her SUV, with her son still in the back seat, at her business, a bait shop in Fellsmere, between 12:30 and 1 p.m. on June 13. She didn't notice her son was still in the car until 5 p.m., according to a warrant affidavit. Source: Sun Sentinel
Why does this keep happening? How can a parent "forget" their child is in the back seat of a car? This is four children in three months that have died from being left in hot cars. What is the solution? Will we need to have mandatory alarms to remind parents what they should be acutely aware of;t That there is a human being in the back seat of their car that is totally dependent on them to REMEMBER they are there.
I wonder how long before I'll be writing about another poor innocent baby who's mother or father was too busy to remember them. I hope it's a long long time.

if this is Stephanie Salvilla from Norton I'm speechless. WOW, went to school with her.
she was one of the first group of friends when I hit my "freedom, I have a car" stage of life. those group of friends are still a huge part of my teen years. only see or talk to one today but the memories are very strong and very dear to my heart.

Yes it is the same one, it is really tragic that this has happened. Not something you really expect to happen to someone you know.

I'm not a dad, but I can't imagine how someone could "forget" their child or "not notice" them in the same back seat that they strapped them in their for the ride. Just a bull**** excuse, she purposely left her child in the back seat so she could do whatever. I don't think she wanted the child to die or anything, but that excuse is ridiculous. Lock her up for a lonnngggg time, no sympathy for her whatsoever..esp after she tries to lie about it.

So a parent just forgets about her kid for 4-5 hours? When did I say she had fun working? No excuses for her, I don't care whose friend she was. Because of her actions, an infant is dead. No half-way decent parent forgets their 6 month old is in the backseat the entire day, eventually it clicks sometime in the day, not when you find your dead kid.... *snaps fingers* "Oh darn". It's negligence, stupidity or whatever...no "parent" does that, throw the book at her. Jeebus, I'm not a parent and I'd NEVER do something that stupid.
I think when a child dies of neglect, it is a crime
I know a little bit about a lot and a lot about a little bit. Don't know everything, don't claim to. Like to talk, like to argue and debate, hate to fight. Might offend some, don't take it personally. :cool:
